Steven's last performance in the Jacaranda series was reviewed in the LA Times. Mark Swed wrote:

"Vanhauwaert is a cool customer at the keyboard. First Presbyterian doesn't have quite as good or large a piano as he needed for music of such vibrant sonorities, but his impressive clarity and sense of structure -- to say nothing of a monster technique -- provided an often startling immediacy to all his sure fingers touched." La Libre Belgique published the following review after the first round of the Queen Elisabeth Competition.

"Steven Vanhauwaert, 26 ans, reprend ensuite les choses en main, avec un Bach (II/20) stable et percussif (sonorités assez seches), une Ile de feu de Messiaen tres maitrisée et un Chopin rapide et élégant. Debussy, trop léger dans le toucher, n'en révele pas moins un musicien inspiré et imaginatif, impression confirmée avec la sonate No. 4 de Scriabine, dotée, en finale, d'une extraordinaire énergie."
